The boy's mother is speaking out tonight about her son's crime and the pain it's
caused her family.
The boy was looking at child pornography on his home computer and his parents
had no idea. But investigators knew and one day they came knocking on the
The boy's mother refused to be identified.
The Utah mother had no idea the officers at her door were tracking activity on
her home computer. Someone she never suspected was looking at child porn.
The boy's mom says, "They actually thought they were coming to talk to me about
my husband using the internet. But it was one of my children. To one in the
family will ever forget this. It was like a death in the family."
Shock, led to heartbreak. The whole family felt victimized.
"We had younger children that lived in our home and because this was a sex
crime against children, there was a lot of interviewing of that went on with my
smaller children and that was really hard," said the woman.
This mother thought she knew her kids' computer habits.
Turns out her son, had wiped the hard drive leaving no trace of the porn.
Officer Sam Winkler with the South Jordan Police Department says, "What we
didn't realize is that most kids are smarter than parents think they are on the
Officer Winkler says most parents don't know what their kids are doing online.
"They see their kid working on homework but when they leave the room their
child does things they shouldn't be doing online," says Officer Winkler.
Winkler holds seminars to teach parents about internet dangers.
"There are programs on the market that will watch your computer for you," says
This mother says in some ways, she's thankful police got to her son now.
"Because otherwise, had they not caught him before he was an adult, he'd be
doing 5 years in prison," she says.
That teen got probation was ordered to counseling, home confinement. It's cost
the family emotionally and financially.
